Schmitz Collection of Photographs by J.C. Haines
This collection of historic photographs of the Inside Passage was assembled in 1885. It includes photographs of Old Metlakatla, Wrangell, Glacier Bay, and Sitka, as well as 14 early images of Juneau and Douglas. The trip was arranged by the Oliver family, wealthy socialites from San Francisco, aboard the SS Ancon. A passenger on this voyage, J.C. Haines, took these photographs and gave them to his sister, Isabel M. Haines.
The Museum, in conjunction with the Gastineau Channel Historical Society, purchased this collection of gold toned albumen prints from R.D. Schmitz, a California collector, during the summer of 2007. The Museum would like to thank the following parties who helped make collecting these rare photographs possible: The Gastineau Channel Historical Society, Mike Blackwell, Jim Geraghty, Mike Grummett, Sunrise Fisheries, Robert Garrison, James and Mary Lou King, Maritime Hydraulics, and Mark Whitman.
All images are the property of the Juneau-Douglas City Museum. No image may be copied, downloaded or reproduced without the express permission of the Juneau-Douglas City Museum.
