The Empty Chair: The Forced Removal and Relocation of Juneau's Japanese, 1941-1951
This exhibit tells the story of eight families taken in 1942 and relocated to the Minidoka Interment Camp in Idaho until the end of World War II. All the families lived in Juneau before or after the war. The exhibit was on view at the City Museum during the summer of 2014 and a memorial to all of Juneau's Japanese interned during WWII was dedicated at the Capital School Park (located at the corner of 5th and Franklin Streets) on July 12, 2014. In addition to the panels on view here, the original exhibit had eight pieces of art by Fumi Matsumoto, artifacts from Minidoka provided by the families and artifacts relating to the two businesses featured. Thank you to the Empty Chair Committee and all of the families for making this exhibit possible.
