Title:
Barber pole from Treadwell
Date:
01/01/1903
Description:
Large wooden barber pole from Treadwell. Remains of paint indicate green at top, then red, then a band of stars (black paint?) on a white background in recessed area, then a thin strip of yellow (or gold?) and the typical diagonal red—and—white barber pole stripes, although not strictly alternating and possibly including gray? Near the base below the diagonal lines, a strip of red, then black, and finally green. There was possibly another decorative element at the top, possibly a sphere, now lost. (see 94.18.011) Wood is probably local spruce, because the knots are close together, and this would have been hard to turn on a lathe, but that is likely how it was made with these complex contours. Spruce may have been a fine grained old growth tree found in a forest somewhere, and the knots are close indicating it might be the top of the tree. (Jim Geraghty)
Notes:
This pole is depicted standing on the boardwalk in front of the Treadwell Club, photo JDCM 94.18.011. Club was built in 1903 and there was a barber inside. Likely burned down in 1926 fire. Pole was found on beach near Treadwell's big yellow office building following a big storm in 1984 by Linda Wahto and Willette Janes, just before the big cave—in area.
