Title:
Mining Machine Star Drill
Date:
1900
Description:
Six—sided hollow "star" drill. Aperture is .25 inches in diameter, flat on one end. Drilling end has four flared star—shaped sections 2 inches long.
Notes:
Found in Sheep Creek Valley near Portal Camp (later made into base camp by Echo Bay Mines, Inc. who leased property to open gold mines, then abandoned the project). Drills were used to drill holes in rock face into which dynamite was placed. Compressed air was forced through hole to "keep dust down," which helped to keep miner from getting silicosis, or "miner's consumption."
