Title:
Gold Tlingit Bracelet Collected by Charles Goldstein, early 1900s
Date:
1900
Description:
Gold band widest at center front, slightly curved and bent to form bracelet. Ends rounded with quarter—inch gap between ends. Incised totemic figures: left to right — eagle, fish (?), bird (?), raven. Four eyes are embossed, as is nostril of central figure. Incised diagonal lines and/or cross—hatching fills void in background.
Notes:
Probably made out of $20 gold coin. Collected by Charles Goldstein who came to Juneau in 1895 (Grandfather of donor). According to Amos Wallace, this is example of "chip carving." The man/raven design was used by old man Katzeek, who died in 1970. Katzeek may have learned from this bracelet maker who was probably an Auk Tlingit.

Bracelet looks quite close to the style and patterns used by Dakl'aweidí clan, Kéet Gooshí hít artist Daniel Katzeek (Keet Eeshaank'í) (1884—1960). The Sheldon Museum has three bracelets attributed to Katzeek and University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) has one.
