Description:
Phonograph in wooden cabinet.
Wooden cabinet with two knobbed doors in front and two doors on top. Dark finish. Top right door hinges back and props open at 60—degree angle. Decal has gold lettering. Phonograph, sunken in recess, has black metal edged, red felt turntable, bulbous chrome arm, round platform for setting needle, chrome gauge for speed, two open bowls and one bowl with slotted cover for spare needles and lever on left. Left top door hinges back to reveal two—inch recess. Left front door hinges left to reveal two vertical compartments, 4.25 inches wide and 7.75 inches wide. Right front door hinges down and then slides into shelf at bottom. Compartment contains speaker with decorative wooden cutout and 2.125"—inch shelf. Four—sided legs flare outwards and widen slightly at bottom. Lower edge of cabinet modified scallop. Metal knob and crank on right of cabinet. Paper with list of patent numbers stapled underneath.
Inscription: "THE INSTRUMENT OF QUALITY / SONORA / CLEAR AS A BELL / HIGHEST SCORE FOR TONE AT PANAMA PACIFIC EXPOSITION 1915".
Notes:
According to donor, phonograph belonged to her mother, Elizabeth "Betty" Jane Barrager Ninnis, who graduated from Juneau High School in 1931. Bought it used about the time she graduated.
