Title:
Anaktuvuk Mask
Date:
01/01/1970
Description:
Anaktuvuk mask, molded rawhide face with holes for eyes and mouth. Eyes are surrounded by strips of brown fur to create lashes. Thick border of slightly paler brown fur surrounds entire mask. Whitish fur with brown tinge used for eyebrows, beard, and fringe above forehead. All fur is stitched to rawhide with light—colored thread.
Notes:
Unusually large for an Anaktuvuk mask. Anaktuvuk masks were developed for the tourist trade, much the way billikens were. To make these masks, raw caribou hide, fur side toward the inside of the mask, was stretched over wooden face forms , soaked in water (often with tea or coffee to darken the color) and allowed to dry. The ruff is made from wolf fur or dog fur most commonly, the facial fur is often caribou. From ANAC Cache; Marie Olson used to work for them.
