Description:
"Mountains and Sea" is a purse or bag with horizontal orientation, patterned beadwork, monochromatic exterior, zipper closure, and patterned interior. The basic shape is a purse of woven beadwork in green, with triangular and chevron patterns. The interior fabric is beige with floral pattern, seems to be cotton. Zipper is plastic.
Notes:
Salty owned and operated the Taku Tailor in Juneau from 1984 to 1994 and then moved full—time into beading with her current business "Spirit Beads" on Fifth street in downtown Juneau. She exhibited her beadwork at the Juneau—Douglas City Museum in 2001 and at the Juneau Arts and Humanities Council in 1999 and 2002. Salty teaches both adults and children extensively through Spirit Beads, a weekly wintertime Bead Circle at the Juneau—Douglas City Museum, in the school district and University, and in many Native villages including Angoon, Hoonah and Metlakatla. These bags are one of her signature artforms not attempted by other local artists, demonstrating several hallmarks of her style including high quality materials, exceptional craftsmanship using a circular seamless construction, careful proportions, and rich harmonious color. The combination of the three—dimensional construction of the bag and the design of the beadwork demonstrate her development as a textile artist while hinting at her past as a professional tailor.
