Description:
Sculptural art work consisting of sixteen (16) paper shipping tags hung by string within a square wire box or cage. Each shipping tag has a black and white photograph image on one side. The photographs are of the artist's family.
Notes:
The sculpture "Gaman" which means "Endure" in Japanese is a wire cage that contains many paper shipping tags, like those that each individual had to wear as they were sent off to the internment camps. Photos of family members are attached to those tags. The tags are symbolic of the incarceration of the over 120,000 Japanese Americans whose lives were disrupted and imprisoned during WWII. ——— statement from artist, Fumi Matusmoto
