Title:
Thane PO Boxes Assemblage, Wood, 4' x 6'
Description:
A — Post office boxes are encased on one rectangular unit that was attached to permanent wall. Made of wood; front and end pieces have dark stain and varnished finish. Front divided into three rectangular sections, vertically oriented. Two outside rectangles are glass, exposing mail boxes. Center section is wood paneled with "window" (for sales) and slot for mail drop box. From back, 136 boxes, sales "window".
B — Money drawer and mail drop box are open and accessible. Boxes composed of stained vertical boards and horizontally strong wire. Paper box numbers are visible from front and back, as well as a few last name tags on back.
C—N — Additional paper box numbers (black and gold) and name tags (black lettering on yellowed paper) were placed in archival storage.
Notes:
PO boxes were left in donor's home by previous owner, Nancy Dethridge, now deceased. Nancy was a collector & antique store owner, who may have acquired boxes when AEL&P closed facilities at Thane. See doc file & GCHS Newsletters 6/2000 & 10/2000. PO was in bldg opposite retail store. PO closed in 1935.
