Object Name:
Ladle, Hot—Metal
Title:
Cast Iron Metal Melting Ladle
Date:
1950
Description:
Cast iron metal melting ladle. 2.5—inch diameter half—sphere ladle has pouring spouts on both sides. Ten—inch handle has hanging hole at upper end.
Inscription: "HOLLANDS. MADE IN U.S.A. 8" embossed in underside of handle.
Notes:
Used by Thomas S. Parke during the 1960's to pour melted lead for molding fishing sinkers and zinc plates for boat electrolysis. Lead residue in the ladle is likely from this activity. Parke had probably acquired the ladle from an abandoned mining or homestead site in the Juneau or surrounding area. A similar "Plumbers or Melting Ladle" is available in the 1902 Sears and Roebuck Catalog.
Cleaned with hot tap water, Ivory dish soap and soft brush.
