Description:
Bear Rattle with base by Ray Watkins, 2012.
A: Two—faced carved, wooden rattle painting with blue, red and black paint. Both faces on rattle represent bear faces. The front face is carved in deep relief. Bear face has a wide, grinning open mouth which is inlaid with abalone for teeth. Below mouth are two black four—fingered paws. Face is mainly blue with red accents on the nose, black accents for the eyes and both red and black accents on the forehead. The back face has a bear face depicted using the traditional form line design of the Tlingit culture and thus is carved using low relief. Bear face has a wide, grinning closed mouth. Below mouth are two red three—figured paws which have blue and black accents on the palms. Face is mainly black with red accents on the nose, blue accents for the eyes and both red and blue accents on the forehead. Interior of rattle head is hollow and contains some kind of material that makes noise when rattle is shaken.
B: Base for rattle, made of wood. Wood is stained. Base is rectangular in shape with rounded edges, a flat top and a flat bottom. Top has a carved circular concave indentation at center in which the handle of the rattle fits into in order to stand rattle up.
