Description:
Spoon has engraved bowl and handle, front and back. Bowl image is of log cabin with caption: "LOG CABIN CHURCH / JUNEAU, ALASKA".
Handle front has four engraved images, beginning at top:
1 — Seal hunting party surrounded by two flags, United States and Union Jack(?) with caption "SEAL of ALASKA".
2 — Train on trestle with caption: "The SUMMIT".
3 — Gold pan with nuggets above shovel and pick ax, no caption.
4 — Totem pole with four characters, caption: "ALASKA".
On reverse are four images:
1 — Sunrise.
2 — Husky dog with litter, caption: "FAMILY of HUSKIES".
3 — Outdoor scene of mountains, trees, water with docks and ship, caption: "SKAGWAY".
4 — Sled dog team with driver, caption: "DOG TEAM".
Inscription: On base of handle back "H.D.K. / Star inside triangle / STERLING"
Notes:
Purchased by donor ca. 1989. Spoon handle was designed by Herman D. Kirmse, Skagway, pioneer jeweler and bears his earliest mark. The spoon's bowl was designed (and the entire spoon manufactured) by Mayer Brothers of Seattle. The spoon also bears their mark, a triangle with a fleur—de—lis in the center, although the fleur—de—lis is not visible.
