Title:
"Juneau Dairy" Large steel milk canister
Date:
1950
Description:
Large cylindrical Juneau Dairies metal milk canister, six holes along rim were probably used for transport or filling purposes. "Juneau Dairies" is embossed into the body of the cylinder. Above and to the right of the embossed emblem is stamped "BUHL—DETROIT, SEALED LO(?)—40 QTS, LIQ, K—2." On the slope of the cylinder two 6.5 inch handles are located on opposite sides of the canister. Small flecks of green paint are left on the handles. On the neck of the canister are larger amounts of green paint. The lid fits recessed into the mouth of the container with a lip that curls above the mouth. Two small hooks on opposite sides of the mouth line up with two holes in the lid. The lid has a handle that runs along the diameter of the mouth.
Notes:
Canister was used sometime between 1936 to 1965. The Juneau Dairies Inc. was formed in 1936. At this time each of the dairies was assigned a different color. Smith Dairy used the color green on it's canister. Freights from the lower 48 put the dairies out of business in '65. Prior to 1936 the Smith Dairy was named Juneau Dairy. Lee Smith changed the name after the Juneau Dairies Inc. was formed to avoid confusion (post 1936). Cliff Bundy obtained dairy equipment in early 1970's after local dairies went out of business in 1965. Bundy got canisters and creamer from one of the Smith sons who were emptying a barn in preparation for the eventual construction of the Nugget Mall.
