White Plaster Phrenology Head

Description:
A: Man's white plaster head with rectangular, paper (printed) inscriptions glued to skull reading "Eventuality," "Selfish Propensities", etc. Adhered on the front of the bust, along the lower edge is a piece of brown paper with black text reading "Phrenology". Additional pieces of brown paper are adhered to the other three sides of the bust's base. The text on each is below.
Proper Right:
American Institute of Phrenology. This Institute was chartered for the purpose of giving theoretical and practical instruction in Phrenology and kindred subjects, to those who wish to pursue the study and become qualified to follow in as a profession, or to reap its benefits in other professions or pursuits. All interested may gain the requisite information about the Institute and course of instruction by sending for a circular S. R. Wells & Co., New York.

Back:
Explanation. The brain is double, being divided into two hemispheres, the line running from the back of the neck to the root of the nose. The organs, therefore, are double, one being in each hemisphere of the brain. The left side of the bust has the individual organs labeled; the other side shows the groups, the observer will look for each organ on both sides of the head. We do not look for, nor judge by bumps, but by distance from the base of the brain where it unites with the spinal cord, to the place on the head where the organ is located. The point referred to is situated on a line drawn through the head from the opening of one ear to that of the other, and half way between them.
