Glacier Bugs
Title:
Six small colorful plastic Glacier Bugs
Description:
Tourist curios from the Nugget Shop.
Glacier Bugs examined appear: two items are red with white legs/bottoms, and one item is white with elegant, fine black etched oriental—type designs. Two have purple braided cords, and one has silky pink cord.
Notes:
"Lucky Glacier Bug" is decribed as a Native Alaskan folklore tale of Glacier bugs that live in Glaciers and "feed mostly upon ice—worms. They are rarely seen as they come to the surface only on the darkest nights..The native tradition is that it is very lucky to wear one as they keep off the evil eye by staring it out of countenance. The protruding eye also teaches that by keeping our eye out it will be hard for bad luck to slip up behind us...."(excerpt taken from printed paper curio bag: 93.27.146B) From the Nugget Shop. Donor's mother, Amy Fromholz, worked for Belle Simpson along with Grace Wickersham and Elsie McLain.
