Wood—Handled Red Ice Ax with Rope Leash

Description:
Ice ax with wooden shaft, oval in cross—section, painted red. Head has adz on one side and pick with serrated tip on other. At bottom is steel spike, center wrapped with duct tape. "FGER" & "C—18" written on shaft in marker. Yellow nylon cord with blue accents looped around head to form leash. Stamped into steel head: "HIMALAYA—PICKEL MODELL KUNO RAINER".

"Pickel" means ice—ax in German. Kuno Rainer was famous Alpie & Himalayan mountaineer of the 1930's & 40's. C—18 stands for Camp 18 of JIFP on the Icefield, "FGER is Foundation for Glacier and Environmental Research — the endowed arm of JIRP.
