Title:
Painting of Road as I.O.O.F. Initiation Backdrop
Date:
1940
Description:
Large unframed painting on canvas attached to wooden strainer. Road cuts between two hills, larger hill on PL, leading to water in the distance and snowy mountains on horizon. One—third of the painting is a blue sky with white clouds. Hills are barren with stands of evergreen trees and road is unpaved. Strainer is made of 2—inch by 4—inch boards.
Notes:
Found in attic of former IOOF building on N. Franklin uphill from the Baranof Hotel (built in 1906). Two similar paintings of roads were also found, meant to illustrate the parable of the good Samaritan during I00F initiation functions. A three—part grey building with door, also of painted canvas, was found but would not fit through door. Finn Larsen said these items from Independent Order of Odd Fellows initiations are 1950. See donor file for images.
