Ivory Watchband

Description:
Ivory bracelet consisting of two rows of carved ivory figurines with larger ivory pieces also carved in between. One row of ivory figurines is of dog teams consisting of a musher on a sled and five dogs (two sets of two and one lead dog). The other row of ivory figurines has a whale, a bear, a seal and a walrus. The five larger pieces of carved ivory that connect the two rows of smaller ivory pieces feature bear faces. Each of the five bears has its mouth open (inside of which is colored red). Both end ivory pieces (with the bear faces) have holes through on end where a watch piece could be attached.
Notes:
Collection was collected by Mary Moncia (Monagle) Tweet, oldest daughter of Mary Monica (Hudson) Monagle and James William Mongale. Mary Tweet collected the items when she was a postmistress in Teller from 1931 through 1970 and sent the items back to her mother in Juneau. Mary Monagle kept the collection until her death in 1966 when Rosellen Lillegraven inherited the collection. Rosellen (originally Margaret Ellen Rose Monagle) gave the collection to her brother Merritt Monagle circa 1991. Merritt was the youngest child of Mary and James Monagle. Donor, Ann Monagle, was one of two children of Merritt Monagle and Katherine Monagle. Merritt died in 2004.
