Sand Dollar (Dendraster Excentricus)
Description:
Three sand dollars. Disk with slightly domed top has off—center five—rayed star pattern on top, hole on bottom with radiating branching vein indentations and small anus hole on bottom near edge.
A—B — white
C — brown and velvety. Star pattern barely discernible.
A — 3.25 inches by 3.0 inches by 0.375 inches
B — 2.75 inches by 2.5 inches by 0.25 inches
C — 2.875 inches by 2.75 inches by 0.375 inch
Notes:
"Under Alaskan Seas", Barr and Barr, p. 188. The darker sand dollar was probably collected alive while the "clean" ones were found after death.
Donor's label reads: "SAND DOLLAR— Dendraster excentricus. Rounded shells 3" to 4"; very flat and colored deep purple. Occur in deep water. Found on sheltered flats. White form is skeleton."
