Description:
Rectangular, metal sign with ceramic coating on the front. Ceramic coating is dark blue and has white text. Sign describes bell signals used in running the hoist. The text reads: "ALASKA JUNEAU GOLD MINING COMPANY \ SIGNALS \ 1 BELL HOIST \ 1 BELL STOP, IF IN MOTION \ 2 BELLS LOWER \ 2 SLOW BELLS LOWER, SLOWLY \ 3 BELLS HOIST, MEN ON \ 3 SLOW BELLS HOIST, SLOWLY \ 4 BELLS BLASTING SIGNAL \ 6 BELLS CALL SKIP \ 7 BELLS TURN AIR ON OR OFF \ 9 BELLS DANGER \ LEVELS \ No.00 LEVEL 1—4 BELLS \ No.0 " 1—3 " \ No.1 " 1—2 " \ No.2 " 2—1 " \ SUB " 2—2 " \ No.3 " 3—1 \ No. 4 " 4—1 " \ TO CALL SKIP, RING 6 BELLS, \ PAUSE AND THEN RING STATION \ SIGNAL \ DANGER SIGNAL, IN CASE \ OF AN ACIDENT AND SKIP IS \ WANTED IMMEDIATELY RING 9 BELLS \ BEFORE CALLING SKIP." There are ten metal grommets along the edges of the sign. One gromment in each corner, one along the top edge at center, one along the bottom edge at center and two along both the right and left edge evenly spaced. Text in the lower proper left corner of the sign reads: "Stonehouse Signs, Inc., Denver".
Notes:
The collection is assumed to have been collection from the old AJ Generator Shed in the Last Chance Basin. The collection was on long term loan to the Alaska State Museum from the 1960—1970s until December 2013 when the Alaska State Museum dismantled their mining.
