Description:
Dance bib in traditional Chilkat weaving design and technique with colors of yellow, black, white, and blue—green. Bark fibers spun with the white underwool of the mountain goat make the warp threads. Weft threads are commercially dyed mountain goat wool. Bib has two rawhide thongs approximately 15 inches long tied to top corners of bib.
Notes:
Produced through training grant from State of Alaska and Alaska Council on the Arts which enabled Ehlers to learn traditional weaving techniques of her people. Ehlers, whose Indian name is Kotchguun, is a Tlingit Indian of the Raven—Woodworm clan. Such a bib would be used for dancing at ceremonial occasions such as potlatch or memorial. Ms. Ehlers was required by Grant to donate finished product to museum.
