Tony ("Land of the Ocean Mists: The Wild Ocean Coast Weest of Glacier Bay" by Francis E. Caldwell) went back circa 6 months after the wreck to salvage medical supplies from wreck of Howard Hayes. Gus Swanson must have died in the original wreck.
