Group photo of early volunteer fire department, known as Hose Company No. 1. 22 men in uniform stand in front of and sit on top of an early man—pulled truck. Emory Valentine is identified as second man from right on top of truck. On back written in pencil is "Valentine Hook & Ladder 1897 J V Dept."
Notes:
Also known as "Valentine's Hose Company" after Emory Valentine, founder. Valentine also served as Juneau's mayor from 1908—1912 and 1917—1919. See accompanying notes in collection folder.

The hook and ladder "truck" was pulled by men themselves over planked wooden streets (from Harbanuk's Running Toward the Fires)
