Silver Bow Basin Showing Old Ground Hog Tramway 014B
This area was extensively mined by Thomas Nowell, owner of the Silver Bow Mining Company. The water for the hydraulic giants came from Granite Creek. The old "placer pits" from this process can be seen near the end of Perseverance Trail. In 1893, Nowell built the Bleichart aerial tramway seen here (over 4000 feet long) with 20 electrically lighted towers. The tramway accessed his Ground Hog claims on the east side of Icy Gulch. The towers were gone by 1910. Most placer and hydraulic mining in the area ended by 1912.
