A. Black and white photograph of Alaska Perseverance Mining Company mining operation in Silver Bow basin near Juneau, Alaska. The big angled building in the center is the 100 Stamp Mill, completed in 1907. Alaska Perseverance Mine 012A
Charles H. Pearce became manager of the Alaska Perseverance Mining Company in 1901. It was under his guidance that the first boarding house was built (lower right hand corner) along with other needed structures, as well as driving the Alexander Crosscut Tunnel on Jack Ass Gulch above the stamp mill (big white building.) Construction dates of these buildings are so well documented that most photographs can be dated within a few months. For example, the small covered porch on the front of the stamp mill was the last thing built before the mill burned in 1912. As of 1913, buildings on this site included a compressor house, hoist, boarding house, bunk house, apartments, 5 cottages, staff housing, blacksmith shop, machine shop, mess hall, change house, and hospital. A government school was built in 1916.
