Description:
Blurry black and white photo of tide area, shoreline with buildings. Written in brown marker, "Wilson" Herring boat, old cannery" on front. In ink on reverse, "photo taken in 1937 of Auke Bay from the front of Herb Wendling's log cabin (now gone) next to Ludwig Nelson's House, still there. Wilson herring boat sold herring to commercial fishing boats, they kept the herring in a big net next to the boat.
Notes:
Donor wrote: "I lived with my aunt and uncle Herb and Martha Wendling. Herb worked at the AJ mine, Martha worked as secretary to Ralph Rivers, who she later married after my uncle died. I was in the 8th grade. I belonged to the ___? group (?) that met at the Auk Bay Church. I used to walk to the Mendenhall Glacier in the winter to ice skate. A few years ago I visited Juneau and Duane Hafner ... took my wife around. I was sorry to see my old school gone, Auk Bay full of boats, paved highway".
