Bottom proper left looks like a hillside with trees chopped down. Four structures on proper left in foreground and one in the center. The Gastineau Channel runs through the horizontal center of the image with Goat Island in the center proper right. A tall smokestack rises from one of the structures on the proper left. Juneau Mountains in the distance.
"Partridge" is printed on the bottom left. "From the stamp mill" is written in pencil in the bottom center, and "Opposite the Post Office, Portland, OR." is printed on the bottom right.

On the back: a stamp in the top left corner "Partridge Photo., In Alaska, Summer 1886." Printed in the center "Duplicates of this Photograph can be made at any time at Partridge's, Western Headquarters, Opposite the Post Office, Portland, Oregon, U.S.A., E.J. Partridge, W.H. Partridge." Along the left edge is written in pencil "Treadwell mining camp, Gastineau Channel, Goat Island, main land in distance."

Is "Goat Island" Mayflower Island? 120 Mill in lower corner with big smoke stack. House in center is John Treadwell's house, according to Jim Geraghty.
