Title:
Salmon Creek below dam site.
Photographer:
Winter and Pond
Description:
Black and white photograph of Salmon Creek waterfalls below dam site.
Notes:
Before the dam was built, the waterfalls on lower Salmon Creek were a sight to behold, on par with the views of Mendenhall Glacier and Auke Lake. By 1913 a 175 foot high dam was being built in Salmon Creek Basin by the Alaska Gastineau Mining Company to harness electrical power for its new mill south of Juneau. Gravel used in the concrete was dug by power scrapers from this valley, which eventually formed a lake when the dam was completed in 1914.
