Artist — Creator:
DeArmond, Dale

1958
Description:
Drawing, Charcoal of Tlingit Leader. Framed with white 2" mat.
Man is oriented towards the PR side of the drawing. He is wearing traditional clothing of a hat and Chilkat robe. The hat, a shakeeat has two bird faces stacked on one another, string like material sticking up on the top 2". Looks like fur on the sides of the hat. The man has wrinkles around his eyes and a white beard and mustache. The robe has a white stripe making a V directly below the beard with a thicker black stripe, then another thin white stripe, a thick gray stripe and a thin white stripe. The rest of the robe has a traditional design that is not distinguishable. On the PL more of the design is visible and on the PR not very much can be seen.
Notes:
The donor provided this information: "My mother Mamie Feusi, was born in Douglas in 1906, and since her father traded there in Native artifacts, I'm sure she would personally have seen Native elders wearing items like those in the pictures. I believe she and my father Marcus Jensen probably purchased the pictures soon after they were made in the late 50s, and displayed them in their home till their deaths in 2001."

This portrait is of Anayálahaash. The title is a hereditary name given to a leader of the T'aaku Kwáan. He is wearing a Chilkat robe and a shake.át, both are traditional and ceremonial garments. The images on clothing such as this were a way to pass down history through generations where a written language did not exist. These images remain an important part of Tlingit culture.

This drawing was executed from a 1906 Case & Draper photograph.
