Description:
Painting Oil, framed
Seward and Front Streets have been replaced with water to create canals.
Sidewalks in painting are square gay stones. There is a light post with two lamps in the PL foreground. There are two stone bridges over Seward and Front streets with carved bird figures at each corner, the name of the street is carved in a plaque on the center of the bridge. A man is fishing from the Seward bridge. A canoe sits in the water surrounded by red and white stripped poles, a man sits behind the canoe on a set of stairs playing a guitar.
In the center of the painting is a plaza with five trees, two tables with red and blue umbrellas, two benches and a gilatto espresso stand that is red, green and white.
The background of the painting is a white stone building and a green mountain. On the PR is the Gross 18th Century Building spelled "Rossi" so that it sounded Italain. The street clock is visible on the corner of Front and Franklin.
Notes:
"This painting started out as a response to the great excavated half block of downtown real estate that has ben left as a 10' deep "pit" for the last several years. I thought I would see what it would look like as a public park, a sort of proposal to the City Planning Commission. After the plaza was painted it became apparent that it would be even more interesting if the streets were excavated instead, and filled with water, as all of Juneau South of Front and Franklin is tidewater on pilings and fill" Says DeRoux

Front and Seward was originally waterfront. During the days of the great Juneau mines, at the turn of the first century, fill from the mines was used to expand that area for more buildings and city infrastructure.
