Description:
Ink illustration published in the Juneau Empire by the artist Tony Newman. The cartoon shows a city waterfront with seven cruiseships moored in the harbor. The cruiseships do not have enough room to all dock along a wharf so they are seen as the letters N and O.
The cartoon includes two information squares. The one in upper proper right reads: "SEVERAL CRUISE SHIPS RECENTLY ARRANGED TO FORM THE WORD "NO" IN THE JUNEAU HARBOR——IN PROTEST, IT WAS THOUGHT AGAINST PASSENGER FEES." The other square reads: "...BUT IT TURNED OUT THIS WAS JUST THE ONLY WAY THEY COULD ALL FIT AT THE SAME TIME."
Notes:
The legislature under Governor Sean Parnell decided to decrease the passenger tax on cruise ship tourists to encourage more visitors after the world economic crisis decreased cruise ship passenger bookings.
The tax was decreased. Total number of visitors to Juneau decreased by around 100,000 during this period.
