The cartoon includes four separate stories. In upper proper right several figures ride on a carousel with the banner around the ride reading: "STIMULUS PACKAGE". There is wording in a scroll to the proper left of the carousel: "GOV. PALIN AND STATE LEGISLATORS CONTINUED TO RIDE THE CAROUSEL". On lower proper right is a figure dressed like a cowboy in hat and chaps being bucked off a mule with the label: "DEMS" and the label: "TIM GRUSSENDORF GOT THROWN FROM A BUCKING DONKEY". In upper proper left is a figure walking a tight rope. On the poles on either end of the wire is a sign: "CONGRATS UNCLE TED" and "FADE AWAY, UNCLE TED" The label under the wire reads: "SENATOR MARK BEGISH WALKED A FINE LINE...". At bottom proper left is a cannon with the label: "GOVT. PROSECUTION". A man dressed in a suit and tie with glasses stands to proper right of the cannon. The label in mid page reads: "TED STEVENS LANDED ON HIS FEET AFTER GETTING SHOT FROM A CANNON."
Notes:
This political cartoon refers to several events occurring in spring of 2009. Governor Palin decided to ask the legislature to give Alaskan residents a special one time stimulus payment of approximately $1000 in addition to the permanent fund dividend. This stimulus money was in result to the US recession.
Senator Ted Stevens was prosecuted by the US government in the fall of 2008, just before the election. Mark Begich won Senator Stevens' seat in the US Senate. In spring 2009, the verdict was overturned against Senator Stevens due to prosecutorial misconduct. Thus the tightrope walking of Senator Begich. He wants to retain his seat in the senate. A few people said that he should resign so Ted Stevens could regain his seat.
Governor Sarah Palin attempted to nominate Tim Grussendorf to Kim Elton's vacant Juneau Senate seat. Grussendorf had been a registered Republican until only a few weeks prior, so the State Democratic party rejected the nomination. This was one of several attempts by Palin to nominate a republican for the previously democratically held seat.
