Description:
Ink illustration published in the Juneau Empire by the artist Tony Newman. The cartoon illustration shows a cruise ship run aground on a rock. The cruise ship has the title: "ALASKA CRUISE BOOKINGS 2009". The rock the ship is on is titled: "WORLD FINANCIAL CRISIS". There are two cruise ship crew on the upper deck and both have dialog balloons coming from them. THe person on proper right is saying: " LOOKS LIKE WE'VE COME UP AGAINST A LOW TIDE...". The person on proper left is saying: "LET'S BLAME THE HEAD TAX!".
Notes:
This cartoon refers to the major economic recession in the U.S. in 2008 and 2009. The governor (Sean Parnell) and some legislators claimed that the slump in tourism visits to Alaska was a result of a tax specifically based on tourist visits called the head tax. This tax is used to construct better services for tourist visitors. The legislature decreased the head tax to encourage increased tourism. Many people in Juneau felt that the economy was the cause of decreased bookings and not the tax.
