Description:
Ansonia Drop Octagon Wall Clock (A) with separate pendulum stem (B) pendulum weight (C) steel key (D) and brass key (E) Overall shape of clock is a vertical rectangular box with a point on the bottom, and the round face has a framing element that is octagon shaped. The bottom section below the octagon has a small door with a reverse—painted glass window.
Notes:
Collected by donor's father, Eugene Specht, who moved to Juneau in the 1940's. He was in the service. The exact cannery is unknown, but he got this from a local cannery according to the family records.
These clocks seem to have been manufactured between 1890 and 1905. The shape was very popular at the turn of the century. It might have been an old clock by the time it was used in the cannery, however. The company went out of business in 1930.
In spite of its poor condition, it was accepted because we have little in the collection that interprets canneries, an important part of southeast Alaska history
