Lidded Spruce Root Basket

Description:
A — Cylindrical twined basket with B — lid, made of split spruce root. Exposed surface of sides and lid are decorated with false embroidery, aniline dyed grass wrapped over waft. Regular close weave used throughout; edges of basket and lid left unfinished, warp ends cut flush with weave. Basket known as "tu—dar huck" because pebbles or shot are enclosed in chamber in lid. Pattern on chamber on lid may be fern frond unfolding in spring. Pattern on basket sides are geometric: horizontal "H's" interconnected with crosses on light background. Colors used in embroidery: plum, brown, wheat, copper, light brown. Basket rim and bottom have different weave than rest of basket.

Object originally from Spicket collection, was purchased at Forget—Me—Not Antiques by donor. Object made as souvenir for tourists.
