Title:
Wood Snowshoes with Woven Leather Centers
Date:
1930
Description:
Pair of wooden frame (oak?) snowshoes with leather mesh centers. Hand made wood climbers attached to front crossbar with two pieces heavy gauge wire. Much newer leather harness (binding) attached to snowshoes. Three metal adjustment buckles on each harness. Snowshoes varnished (climber not varnished). Snowshoe tails each bound with two metal rivets. Three crossbars support snowshoe frames.
Inscription: "216" in pencil handwritten on crossbar under climber. Price may also be written there in grease pencil. $8.50?
Notes:
Belonged to Thomas S. Parke who used snowshoes 1930's through 1960's. Snowshoes likely commercially made. Climbers probably made and attached by Parke. These allowed steeper vertical assents and descents. The new harnesses were purchased, assembled and used by Parke's daughter, Mary Ann, in the late 1960's and early 1970's.
