Woven Bamboo Pelagic Gear Tray

Description:
Circular, woven bamboo pelagic gear storage tray. Circumference rim of .5—inch diameter bamboo lashed together with dyed grass or rushes — total rim diameter 1.5 inches. Lashing is layered cotton twine. Tray composed of woven bamboo strips fastened along rim. Hook holes in rushes around rim. Nylon twine secures broken bamboo strips in 10 "3 to 9" repairs.
Notes:
Tray beachcombed and preserved by Thomas S. Parke. Found on beaches of northern SE Alaska — possibly Southern Admiralty Island.

Trays are used on Asian fishing boats to store pelagic (probably salmon) longline gear. Line is coiled onto the tray and attached hooks are fastened into the rushes the small holes in the rushes are where hooks were secured. Patterns woven into trays are unique where hooks were secured. Patterns woven into trays are unique to the communities in which they are made. Filled trays are stashed for deck storage.
