Object Name:
Hook
Title:
Halibut Hook
Date:
1935
Description:
Wooden Halibut Hook.
Traditional style v—shaped halibut hook lashed together with root. Steel barb lashed to one leg. On the other leg is a carving of a bird with four appendages and a tail. Through the center of the bird's back is a perfectly round hole, drilled to hold a fishing line.
Notes:
A traditional style V—shaped hook for catching halibut, with a carving of a bird. Halibut were often too large to land in a traditional canoe, making the catch very dangerous. Native fishermen designed their hooks to fish for medium sized halibut.

As per a conversation with the donor on 10/21/2011. His parents were living in Kake in 1935 and likely purchased the object at that time. AEF
