Description:
Refractive Index Mineral Grains/Standards
A: Box Lid
Red wood rectangular box lid. The back is higher than the front and slopes down to the front. There is a label on the front that reads "ALLEN SET / REFRACTIVE INDEX / STANDARDS / 60 GLASSES & MINERLS (100 MESH) / M—1 / R. P. CARGILLE NEW YORK."

B: Base
Red wooden rectangular base. Five tiered risers each with 12 holes for bottles.

C—JJJ: Bottles
A series of 60 small glass viles with a black plastic top and a paper label, each with a different compound in it. Bottles were not individually labeled.

Used to determine the mineral composition of an ore sample. If the refractive index of a mineral grain being analyzed via the immersion method (see 2007.22.074) fell between that of two known minerals, or mineral grains of a known mineral with a known refractive index could be used for comparison.
