Used to test for the presence of certain toxic gasses in the air of an old mine. This instrument is operated by hand—pumping air through a glass tube attached at the end of a bellows. Filters in the tube reacted with toxic gases to indicate their presence in the surrounding air. Separate tubes were needed for each gas.
