Description:
Untitled painting of the 1935 Douglas Bridge by Ruth Read. Oil painting on canvas or linen of a landscape with a bridge extending across the mid—ground. The foreground consists of blue—green land in the lower proper right corner and blue, yellow, and orange water in the lower proper left. Water continues under and behind bridge. The background shows semi—abstracted buildings and other structures at the base of a snow capped mountain. The painting's surface is heavily textured and has a vibrant use of color. Painting is framed by a simple, beveled dark brown wood frame. View is looking from Douglas Island towards downtown Juneau. The mountain in the background is Mount Juneau and the waterway is the Gastineau Channel.
Notes:
The bridge in the painting was built in 1935 and was the original bridge connecting the downtown area of the city of Juneau to Douglas Island. This bridge was torn down and a new bridge constructed in the 1980's.
