Halibut Hook.
Traditional hand—carved halibut hook fashioned from two sections of wood lashed together with split spruce root at center, back, and barb (plastic or antler). Barb is straight, pointed, and held with semitranslucent orange adhesive. Hole in center top holds length of modern nylon cordage with loop tied in end, affixed in hole by knot and black substance. Top of hook is carved with chevrons and face at each end, apparently fish and person. Initials "GD" written in pencil on both sides for George Dalton and underside of top section is "RT Wallen A—5—1975" written in ink.

Notes:
Donor Russ Cahill bought hook in 1975 during time he was director of Alaska State Parks. Purchased from studio of RT "Skip" Wallen at 217 Seward St (aka "Kayak Gallery). George Dalton would sit out front on chair & carve halibut hooks w/ "crocked knife". As National Park Ranger in late 1960's Russ had become friends w/ George Dalton & his wife, Jessie when they fished small hand troller in Glacier Bay out of Hoonah.
