Title:
Painted Orange—Brown Nine—Foot Wood Oar
Date:
1950
Description:
Painted orange/brown nine—foot wooden oar. Machine milled. Round shaft, 2 inches in diameter. Hand—hold is 5.5 inches; blade 5 inches by 32 inches, shaped. "9" written in felt pen on upper shaft on end of oar handle.
Notes:
Oar from collection of about 30—40 oars beach combed and preserved by Thomas S. Parke. Beachcombing was a popular activity for Parke, his family and charter clients. Oars found among drift wood piles on the beach were prized items and always toted home. The collection was stored in the rafters above the basement work shop and referred to in fun as the "OAR HOUSE." Oars that matched and were of appropriate size were painted, marked with the boat name, fitted with row locks and put back into use. This nine—foot oar is one of the larger of the collection and likely was lost from a large row boat — probably a life boat of a large ship. "9" marking identifies the oar length.
