Tlingit Beaded Wall Pocket "ALASKA JUNEAU"

Description:
Vertical wall hanging with three pockets and a pointed top. Top pocket has whale, eagle and foliate patterns headed on red wool, center pocket has bird looking over its shoulder and foliate patterns on blue wool background, bottom pocket has top view of frog—like figure with human face and foliate patterns beaded on red background. Between top two pockets, "ALASKA" in alternating black and white beaded letters in jaunty shapes. Between bottom two pockets, "JUNEAU" beaded in the same fashion, both on red wool backgrounds. Pockets lined with blue/white checked gingham cloth, edged with tan velvet, backed with dark blue fabric. Loop at top for hanging. Edged in white beads.
Notes:
Jennie Werner was a painter in Juneau from 1938 — approximately 1980 when she moved to Seattle. Died 1998. See 2002.15 for more information.
Dec 2006 — Flora Huntington of Sugar Bugs Beads and Gifts was at the Native Alaskan Crafts Festival. She was looking through the museum and saw the beaded wall hanging. She said it looked like the work of Annie James. James signature was the killer whales that had their head larger than others. Flora had a few things James beaded and was going to bring it in to compare. She said Annie was married to Frank James who was a silver carver. They have a daughter Anna Blaner.
