Owl Transformation Mask by Duane Bosch, 2012.
Wood carved and painted Owl Transformation Mask made of alder, cedar bark, goose feathers and natural materials. Mask is of a face with both human and bird/owl qualities. Face has an open mouth, a beak for a nose which hooks down to the lower lip of the mouth, and white painted feathers along the chin, cheeks, and above upper lip. Eyes are black and surrounded by green. Protruding from forehead and resting on beak are a face of a man and a bird. The bird's head is resting upon the man's. Its tail bends upward on forehead towards hair line and its wings spread out on either side on forehead. The mask's hair consists of a combination of reeds and goose feathers attache to the top and side edges of mask and continue beyond the bottom limits of mask on either side.
Notes:
Note from artist: This mask depicts a shamans transformative alliance with the snowy owl to gain the ability to visit the land of shadows, and gain insights from the past. It also features a spirit helper with magic cloak that can transform the wearer to a raven.
