Description:
Mussel Shell Rattle by Duane Bosch, 2012.
Painted, wood carved rattle made of yellow cedar, gravel shot, natural fiber, and paint.
A: Wood carved rattle of oblong mussel—shell like shape. Painting with red and black geometric designs which create a face. Head of rattle is hollow and contains gravel shot in order to make noise when shook. Handle of rattle is round, unpainted, and had a section wrapped in twine or another natural fiber.
B: Base for rattle, made of wood. Base is circular in shape with a flat top and bottom. Top has a carved circular concave indentation at center in which the handle of the rattle fits into in order to stand rattle up.
Notes:
Note from artist: Shells containing beach stones were some of the first rattles used by our ancient forbears in the practice of shamanic trance. This carved rattle draws on that heritage. The form line design portrays the mussel as a living creature.

Rattle is stored in two boxes. One containing rattle. One containing base.
