Description:
Charcoal portrait drawing of a man. The man's face is in three—quarters view but his eyes are looking directly at the viewer. He has short, messy hair and a full beard and mustache. He is wearing a collared shirt. He is against a nondescript background. The man is Dave Hunsaker. He is a local Juneau writer (screenwriter).
Notes:
Portrait was included in MK MacNaughton's solo artist exhibition "Secrets" held at the Juneau—Douglas City Museum in March 2014. Each portrait was accompanied by interview text from the sitter. The text that accompanied Dave's portrait read:
"I grew up with an extremely religious mother. My earliest memories are of things I wouldn't or couldn't tell her. My father was a career military man. He never talked about it; he was the model of secrecy. I was in the service, too, and I've learned that Secrets for veterans can be dark. We try to protect our loved ones; we try to project the best image of ourselves.
We moved a lot in my youth, and as a result I had a solitary, but richly creative childhood, which probably led in some ways to my career now as a writer. As artists, I think we expose ourselves, including our dark shameful places. If you're sharing from a real experience the expression is much more authentic… and that often means divulging secrets."
