Description:
Chief Kowee hand—Carved Tlingit mask on copper stand (not accessioned) made from Alaska alder. Mask is hand—painted and adorned with authentic Tlingit hair. Frog face mask has human—like nose, wide lips and thick eyebrows. Face is a turquoise color with a diagonal line of black across the mask. Lips, cheeks, forehead painted red. Plugs of brown hair all along top edge. On reverse in pencil: "Chief Kowee carved by Richard A Beasley in the year 2000. Tlingit Merrilyn T. hair" Acrylic latex house paint.
Notes:
Artist says he began carving the mask in 2000 and finished in 2005.
