Description:
Beaded bag in the shape of a hand.
Bag is made with fabric from a Coast Guard uniform, embroidered with beads and tiny brass tools. The fabric is very dark in color, black or navy blue. It is covered with a variety of beads, semi—precious stones and brass tool charms from an antique bracelet. On the thumb there are two charms: shingling hammer and shears. On the index finger there is one charm: an adjustable wrench. On the middle finger there is a pliers charm. On the pinkey finger there is a plumbers wrench charm. Attached to the wrist of the hand is a metal chain that has a photo of Jim Bentley on it. There is writing on the reverse.
Notes:
Title of the work was changed from "Working Man's Hand" to "Handyman's Hand" at the request of the artist on 5/18/2009.

In December, 2011 the artist contacted the Museum and requested that the name be changed back to "Working Man's Hand" so that the title corresponded to the title used in the 2008 exhibit catalog. AEF
